New review for Small Forgotten Moments

6/2/2022

Picture
Just thought I'd share the latest review for Small Forgotten Moments with you.

Ann S. Epstein has called it "Relentless, Intense, Vivid... as fearless as a gothic horror tale" in her review on her blog.

Ann writes wonderful historical fiction and is a huge supporter of small presses and their authors. Check out the rest of her site once you've read her review of Small Forgotten Moments!

Small Forgotten Moments, still only 0.99

4/1/2022

Both Nook and Kobo have Small Forgotten Moments for only 0.99 at the moment.

I don't know how long it will last, but if you got a new e-reader for Christmas and you're keen to load it up with new books, give it a go!

Or if you've read it and loved it, tell a friend 😎

Is Zenna a muse, a sleep-deprived apparition, or something much more sinister?
Haunting and melodic, fans of Daphne du Maurier and Daisy Johnson will adore this.

Merry Christmas, everyone

19/12/2021

It's that time of year when I start to slow down, I seem to sit at my desk less often and be out drinking coffee (and cider) with friends slightly more, so I thought I'd squeeze in a round-up of my 2021 highlights.
  • The big one, of course, was seeing Small Forgotten Moments published in August - a story idea which has skulked around for many more years than I'd care to admit
  • Fairlight Books published my short story All the Magpies Come Out to Play in July
  • I almost doubled the readership of my newsletter, which was awesome. I'm giving it a fresh new look for 2022, so if you'd like to see what's going on, you can sign up here
  • I completed a new novel and I'm currently weighing my options
  • Despite spending the first three months on furlough from my day job, I've failed to reach my Goodreads Reading Challenge target of 25. I've managed 21, although there are a few days left of the year, so you never know!

Thank you to everyone who has bought a book this year - not just mine, but all the independent authors, small press authors and publishers, and - yes - the Big 5 (or is it 4 now?) mega-publishers. We all appreciate every sale, and I, personally, do a small jig when my Amazon and Kobo rankings increase.
And on that note
Artoo and I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas
filled with books and chocolates and walkies x

Read for yourself the novel described by Tom Gillespie as a “beautiful, heart-wrenching, epic masterpiece” and as “both poignant and action-packed” by Readers’ Favorite.

Additionally, if you're in the UK, I'm offering my three short story collections as a limited edition paperback bundle for just £10 (including P&P).

Our Beautiful Child contains three novellas all set in and around the same pub. There’s a mystery, a ghost, and a crisis – the stories interweave but there’s a specific flavour to each of them.
That Sadie Thing gathers my published and prize-winning stories between 1994 and 2010, including a couple of my all-time favourites Beth and Omelette, and the very first story I had accepted.
You. I. Us. is a collection of vignettes (often no more than a page in length) with a few longer stories thrown in. It includes my 2015 Costa Short Story Prize winning Watching the Storm Roll In.

Interviews and other things

27/10/2021

It's been a whirlwind couple of months since Small Forgotten Moments was published, so here's a glimpse of what I've been up to.

I'm featured on The Enterprising Writer discussing my lack of planning and how I 'bumble' around trying to find the right story.

I talked about my whole writing career with Roz Morris, from the first inkling I might be a writer up to how I coped with lockdown.

Hilary Melton-Butcher is a wonderful online friend who won a copy of Small Forgotten Moments and then featured me on her blog, Positive Letters... Inspirational Stories.

I got a little petulant about beaches over on Elizabeth Seckman's blog.

And finally, I talked to Nick Wilford about how I recycle my words to make a bad book better.

It's a giveaway, and it's a special one

To celebrate the launch of my latest novel Small Forgotten Moments, I’m giving away this stunning blue sea glass pendant. It was sourced on the very beach where the novel is set by the wonderfully talented and keen-eyed Megan at SeaShaw Sea Glass Jewellery.

Blue sea glass is apparently rare, so when Megan showed it to me, I knew it was the perfect prize. I mention a blue necklace in the novel, and although it’s not sea glass, the coincidence was too good to pass up.

The pendant is roughly one centimetre wide, making it a lovely delicate piece, and hangs on 16cm silver chain.

All you have to do is click the button below and enter your details. Terms and conditions can be found here

The competition will be open until Friday 3rd September, and I'll announce the winner via the email address you give when you enter.

Is Zenna a muse, a sleep-deprived apparition, or something much more sinister?

Suffering long-term amnesia, artist Jo Mckye is ready to start a fresh, new project after the success of her debut exhibition. But the fictional subject of the collection, Zenna, won’t let go so easily. Infiltrating Jo’s dreams—and increasingly, her waking hours—Zenna is fast becoming a dangerous obsession.

Jo is confident the answers lie at her childhood home, an idyllic Cornish village on the south-east coast; she just doesn’t know why. Only when she walks into the sea and almost drowns does the past start to unravel.

Haunting and melodic, fans of Daphne du Maurier and Daisy Johnson will adore this.

Pre-order your copy today (all formats catered for)

With a week to go before my launch, I'm excited, nervous, and at times very calm. Thank you to everyone who has supported me during another difficult year, to everyone who has pre-ordered the book, and to everyone who has shared my posts or commented or bought me a coffee in real life xx

A couple of events

3/8/2021

To celebrate the launch of Small Forgotten Moments, I'm organising a couple of things. Hopefully more will be added as I go along.

Zoom Book Launch

31st August is publication day, and to celebrate I'm having a Zoom launch party, co-hosted by my long-time writing friend J.S. Watts who will be in charge of a Q&A session.

Bring your own drinks and snacks and settle down for 40 minutes of me being embarrassed in front of a camera!

Book Signing

My local bookshop, The Bookshelf in Saltash, is has invited me to have a book signing on 8th September.

Not only will I be signing books and having a chat about the novel, I'll be indulging in their delicious chocolate cakes and coffees.

New short story alert

8/7/2021

The wonderful people at Fairlight Books have published my lockdown-themed short story All the Magpies Come Out to Play.

Don't worry, it's a positive and heart-warming story based on my experiences of the first lockdown in April/May 2020, written when the streets were deserted and birdsong filled the air because no other sounds drowned them out.

Has anyone else noticed an abundance of magpies over the last year or so? On my walks with Artoo, we'd see flocks of six or more on a regular basis, and that's when the story started to take shape.

Click here to read the story, and please let me know what you think!

Early publicity for Small Forgotten Moments...

7/7/2021

With 54 days until the launch of my next book, the publicity machine is well underway. The novel - once my character Jo leaves London - is set on a beach in south east Cornwall, so we've been focusing on local publications because local people will be very familiar with the beach (if I've done my job well!)

Small Forgotten Moments will launch on 31 August, and pre-orders are available from Amazon, Kobo, and more.

"A soulful tale of painting, secrets and longing, which draws the reader into a world of mystery and memory.  Filled with the colours of an artist’s mind and set against the wild backdrop of the Cornwall coast - an enchanting read."
                                            - Leonora Meriel, author of The Unity Game
"A deftly-told story of a young woman with amnesia investigating her own past. It’s beguiling, haunting, beautifully paced and it kept me hooked to the very end.”
                                            - Michael Walters, author of The Complex

Small Forgotten Moments - pre-orders are live!

9/6/2021

Pre-orders are such an important part of the publishing/publicity cycle, so I'm very excited to share these links where you can grab yourself a copy, forget about it for a couple of months, and then have it pop onto your e-reader or drop through your letterbox!

It's technically a present to your future self!

Here they are!

Cover Reveal - Small Forgotten Moments

28/4/2021

With huge excitement, I'd like to introduce you to the cover of my latest novel, Small Forgotten Moments, which will be published 31 August 2021.

The blurb:

Haunting and melodic, fans of Daphne du Maurier and Daisy Johnson will adore this

Jessica Bell, my publisher at Vine Leaves Press, has created another stunning cover, and I couldn't be happier with her interpretation of Zenna.

Small Forgotten Moments is on Goodreads now, so if you like the sound of it, please add it to your list here.

That Sadie Thing is back!

14/3/2021

Picture
I'm not really sure what to say, but almost immediately I pulled That Sadie Thing from general sale in December, I had a change of heart. I thought it would go away, but it hasn't.

You see, I love old books. I'm firmly old-fashioned in the belief that my work will outlive me. Not to the extent, obviously, of Austen or the Brontes, but a small piece of me will carry on. All I can say is that December was a particularly emotional time for me, and now - with distance - I love these stories too much to abandon them.

So here it is, with a brand new cover, and with the three bonus stories which were originally only included in the paperback version (which remains out-of-print for the time being - aside from the copies which live under my desk!)

Re-publishing it has also meant I can tidy up some of the grammatical issues, and my inclination to spell 'smooth' incorrectly through-out. And for the first time, That Sadie Thing will be available on the majority of ebook platforms from 31 March.

Facebook group for readers and writers

24/2/2021

Recently, I created a new group on Facebook aimed at introducing the readers I know with the writers I know.

Most of the writers I know are indie and small press authors. Many of the readers I know don't realise what a wealth of wonderful talent is out there, if they could just find it. So I thought it would be cool to create a group where the two could meet.

It's an idea I've had for a long time, but executed on the spur of the moment, when I had lots of other things I should have been doing, so the group will evolve - I hope - over time.

My aim is to bring together people who are passionate about books, and where readers can discover new authors.

Pop along, and see what's going on!

Last chance to buy!

24/12/2020

On 31st December 2020, as we all collectively breathe a sigh of relief that the year is finally over, my short story collection That Sadie Thing will be pulled from general sale.

But don't worry! You'll still be able to grab yourself an eBook (KIndle or ePub) by signing up to my newsletter, or - while stocks last - a signed paperback for the fabulous price of just £5 (including UK P&P - ask for worldwide postage costs). Just get in touch via my contact form.

Did you know... the paperback version includes three additional and exclusive stories? I never remember to tell people that 🤦‍♀️

If that isn't enough of an offer for you, you can also still pick up Grace & Serenity bundled alongside two other YA books (offer closes 25th December), or buy it separately to help me raise money for the Shekinah charity in Plymouth UK.

I hope you have a safe, peaceful, and happy Christmas. And I wish you a quiet, less eventful 2021. I think we all deserve that xx

Raising money for a local charity

17/12/2020

When I was writing Grace & Serenity, I knew Grace was going to be homeless for a while, but I also planned where her story would go next. In real life, there usually isn’t a plan when people find themselves homeless, and for much of the time there’s no next. This year has been difficult for so many people and proven that anyone can find themselves a position where they need help and support.
Shekinah is a charity in Plymouth and Torbay which “provides opportunities for people who maybe experiencing homelessness, drug and alcohol issues, offending behaviours or mental ill health. Shekinah believes that everyone deserves to be given another chance”.

They say:

“Although the injustice of homelessness is at the core of Shekinah’s work, there is an increasing demand from those people with complex needs, including mental health, substance abuse and criminality. Working with key strategic partners, Shekinah helps people access support to help move away from the streets, address their health issues, learn new skills via our training centre and receive help in finding work with the support of the local business community.”
Picture
Plymouth is very close to my heart, so I was overjoyed when book blogger Literary Flits commented on it specifically in her review:

"Grace’s rapid slide into isolated homelessness is all too plausible though. Crawford vividly describes Plymouth’s urban landscape and I could visualise this city in a different light after having been shown it from Grace’s perspective."

For all copies of Grace & Serenity sold this December, I will be donating half the royalties to Shekinah. My goal is to reach 100 sales this month, which will mean I can provide a complete ‘meal’ for their Christmas appeal, Christmas Menu for Change.
